Huawei has unveiled the first phone without Android; what are its features?

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has unveiled the Mate 70 and Mate Xs foldable series. The company recently launched these series in the Chinese market.
With this, Huawei has officially severed ties with Android. These phones completely use Huawei's own operating system, 'Harmony OS Next,' which the company developed independently in its own country.

Harmony OS was first unveiled in 2019. At that time, it was based on the Android framework. However, now Huawei has stopped embracing Android, which means that Android apps can no longer be used on new Huawei phones.

Huawei is working to encourage developers to develop apps based on its own OS. According to Chinese media reports, Huawei has already made more than 10,000 apps compatible with Harmony OS Next and aims to develop 100,000 apps by the end of this year.

The Mate 70 series is the first flagship phone to use Harmony OS Next. However, the Mate 70 and Mate Xs series will not come with Harmony OS Next pre-installed. These phones will come with Harmony OS 4.3 pre-installed, which will leave some Android elements intact. Harmony OS Next will be available for installation in a few months. Users will be able to use the new OS as they wish. The company will make Harmony OS Next the default on new devices by 2025.


Huawei's move to provide an Android-free experience has been evaluated from various angles. The company has made a controversial decision to create its own OS, breaking the dominance of American companies in the OS. It remains to be seen how Chinese users will take to the new operating system. However, the company is confident that the new OS will improve the user experience. The challenge for Huawei will be to encourage developers to invest in its ecosystem and make users dependent on its ecosystem.
